6 Romantic Date Ideas Around South Lake Tahoe

Maybe there’s something in the water or the fresh mountain air, but love is always in the air in Lake Tahoe. The stunning water and mountain views provide the perfect backdrop for a special date or romantic getaway, so it’s no surprise many people choose Lake Tahoe for a getaway with that special someone.
We get a lot of happy couples from all over here at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel, and many ask us for advice on romantic date ideas and activities. While there are plenty of great nightlife and restaurant options, we often recommend couples spend some time together outdoors and soak up the natural beauty of the area.
Whether you’re celebrating a wedding, honeymoon, anniversary, or just want to enjoy each other’s company, check out some of our favorite romantic day trips and date ideas for couples around Lake Tahoe.
1. Take a ride on the Heavenly Gondola.
You really can’t beat the picturesque views from the Heavenly Gondola. Start by getting to know each other and connecting over a coffee or lunch at the Heavenly Village. Then, hitch a ride up the mountainside and get ready to take it all in. We recommend snapping some selfies with your sweetheart along the way. It’s the perfect excuse to snuggle up close — plus you’ll have some cute shots for your Instagram or Facebook! Experiencing the gondola is a great romantic precursor to a fun day of skiing and snowboarding down the mountain and enjoying each other’s company.
2. Enjoy a romantic outdoor picnic.

Nothing quite says storybook romance more than a cozy picnic. There’s really no shortage of great spots in South Lake Tahoe during the spring and summer. Eagle Falls makes for a quick hike with beautiful waterfall views — perfect for a picnic. We also have plenty of great beaches nearby — including Round Hill Pines Beach, Baldwin Beach, and Connolley Beach — that have some handy picnic tables and great water views for a cozy outdoor meal together. Pack all your favorite foods, a bottle of California wine, and a blanket for a special afternoon. Local’s head to Yellow Sub or Sprouts for tasty sandwiches & food to go. Or visit The Cork & More for specialty cheeses & pates and the perfect bottle of wine!
3. Hit the skies in a hot air balloon.

If you’ve never taken a hot air balloon ride, it really is something to add to your bucket list. It’s magical experiencing the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the lake from up above. With Lake Tahoe Balloons, you’ll see Emerald Bay, Fallen Leaf Lake, Cascade Lake, and the Desolation Wilderness. Take the tour right before sunset for even more natural beauty. Enjoy some provided refreshments on board and soak it all in with that special someone.
4. Cruise around the lake.
Ahoy! Whether it’s a relaxing daytime cruise or a romantic dinner cruise at sunset, a boat cruise is a really exciting way to experience Lake Tahoe with your partner. Just kick back and relax on your paddle wheeler, yacht, or sailboat and enjoy the sun and surf together. Many cruises and boating packages, like Lake Tahoe Cruises and the Rum Runner Cruise, include dining and beverage options, so you can make a whole day of it.
5. Go ice skating at Heavenly Village.

This is such a classic winter couple activity, it had to be on our list. Skate hand-in-hand around the outdoor rink in Heavenly Village. If you’re not much of a skater, consider taking lessons and practicing together as a couple. Either way, it’s a fun way to enjoy the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe, get some fresh air, and get to know each other on a deeper level. Plus, the lights and festive music really add something special to the experience. After an afternoon of skating, head to Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel for our evening Happy Hour and warm up with some free snacks and great beverage deals!
6. Play a round of mini golf.
Challenge your loved one to a rousing game of mini-golf and unleash your competitive side! In the summer, the Heavenly Village ice rinks become a fun mini-golf course perfect for all ages and experience levels — and the perfect activity for a date. The loser owes the winner a delicious dinner for two at Echo!
